At one point in his career, C. Samuel "Sam" Facey stepped off the legal track to take a job in humanresources — not because he wanted to give up his law career, but because he wanted to make it better.
After a few years as an attorney in the labor and employment practice group at Michael Best & Friedrich LLP, the Chicago-Kent College of Lawgraduate took what he called a "strange detour" into HR at Integrys Energy Group Inc. Facey, who earlier in his career had been an attorney at the National Labor Relations Board for a couple of years, managed labor and employee relations for several bargaining units in Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
"Given that I was going to be an employment lawyer, I always wanted to see it from the other side, in terms of, 'What is it like when you're actually the client?'" he told Law360 Pulse on Monday. "It helped tremendously because, as lawyers, you're thinking law, and it's a different way of thinking."
