Mike serves as Chair of the firm’s Life Sciences and Chemical industry group. He is a strategic partner and advisor to clients including major research universities, emerging and mid-sized companies, and Fortune 500 corporations around the world.
He assists clients with all of their patent needs including preparation and prosecution, strategic counseling, commercialization, and portfolio management.
Mike has considerable experience with a broad range of technologies. In his role as Chair of the Life Sciences and Chemical industry team, he ensures the firm’s attorneys and professionals remain at the forefront of emerging technologies and issues impacting the biological and chemical industries.

Mike works extensively with large research institutions and universities across the country. He helped develop and implement the firm’s University Patent Practice, which provides a variety of features designed to develop close working relationships with technology commercialization offices and faculty, and to enable Michael Best to serve as a strategic partner to our university clients.
Mike helps his university and corporate clients assess, protect and enforce their IP, navigate the complex business, legal and regulatory environment, and capitalize on the value of their inventions. In addition to his patent practice, Mike also counsels clients on trademark and copyright matters.
Prior to becoming a patent attorney, Mike worked for several years in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries and in academic research. Before joining Michael Best, he practiced for six years at an intellectual property law boutique in Portland, Oregon.
