Nick brings strong experience and training as a mechanical engineer to his work in patent preparation and prosecution. A creative thinker who is known for his meticulous attention to detail, he helps clients develop proactive as well as defensive patent strategies.

Nick joined Michael Best as a Patent Engineer in 2008. Prior to joining the firm, he worked for a Fortune 500 motor production company, where he was involved in the design, testing, and performance analysis of high-performance transmissions. During his time in the automotive industry, Nick gained valuable welding, machining, and fabrication skills that have proven useful in his patent work.  

Experience

Notable representations include:

  • Orchestrating and updating a large family of interrelated patents to correspond with the updated umbrella design for a food preparation company
  • Obtaining patent protection for core technology for an automotive client
  • Dissecting a large, umbrella design into an entire patent portfolio strategy for a biomechanical company. Nick acted as point in organizing the preparation of each sub-part by separate lawyers.
  • Working with a food preparation client to help develop the concept in a way that emphasized potentially patentable subject matter, while also helping to create new features for the design. This concept work set the stage for a corresponding patent application.
